Who Must Report Child Abuse?
In California, the law says that anyone who works with children professionally and believes or knows that a child is being abused or neglected must report it right away to the local law enforcement or child welfare services.
Who are Mandated Reporters?
Mandated reporters include people who work with children, such as:
- Childcare workers (like teachers and daycare providers);
- Health professionals (doctors, nurses, etc.);
- Child protective services workers (police, social workers, etc.);
- Film and photo processors;
- Child visitation monitors;
- Police officers;
- Probation and parole officers;
- Custodial officers;
- Firefighters, animal control officers, and humane society officers;
- Clergy (except for confession or similar situations);
When Should the Report Be Made?
The report must be made as soon as possible.
Free Online Training for Mandated Reporters:
The California Department of Social Services (CDSS) offers free online training for all mandated reporters. This training is available on the Mandated Reporter website.
The training has seven modules, which take 2 to 4 hours to complete. It includes a general training for all mandated reporters and special training for specific groups like:
- Clergy
- School staff
- Child care providers
- Law enforcement
- Social workers and mental health professionals
- Medical professionals
