What Is Narcan?

Narcan is the brand name for naloxone, a medication that temporarily reverses the effects of opioids. It can help restore breathing when someone is experiencing an opioid overdose.

Signs of an Opioid Overdose

  • Slow, weak, or no breathing
  • Blue or gray lips or fingertips
  • Unresponsiveness or inability to wake up
  • Choking, gurgling, or snoring sounds
  • Pinpoint pupils
  • Limp body

What to Do During a Suspected Overdose

  1. Call 911 immediately.
  2. Give Narcan as directed.
  3. Try to keep the person awake and breathing.
  4. Place the person on their side if they are breathing but unresponsive.
  5. Stay with them until emergency help arrives.

Is Narcan Safe?

Yes. Narcan is safe to use, even if you are not sure whether opioids are involved. It will not harm someone who is not experiencing an opioid overdose.

Important Reminder

Narcan works temporarily, and overdose symptoms can return. Always call 911 before giving Narcan, even if the person wakes up.
