January is National Human Trafficking Prevention Month

Human trafficking involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain labor or commercial sex act. Every year, millions of men, women, and children are trafficked worldwide.  It can happen in any community and victims are of all ages, races, genders, and nationalities. Traffickers use violence, threats, deception, and other manipulative tactics to trap millions of people worldwide.

January is a month to remind us of the vital role we play in ending Human Trafficking.

If you are a Survivor/Victim of Human Trafficking or Sexual Exploitation, and are seeking support and services, call Wild Iris at 877-873-7384 -or- the National Human Trafficking Hotline 888-373-7888 (or text* 233733)

If you see something that doesn’t look or feel right, call Mono County Sheriff’s at 760-932-7549 -or- the National Human Trafficking Hotline 888-373-7888 (or text* 233733).

If you believe someone is in immediate danger, Call/Text 9-1-1.

Do not attempt to confront a suspected trafficker directly or alert a victim to suspicions. It is up to law enforcement to investigate suspected cases of human trafficking. The safety of the public, as well as the victim, is critical.

Current statistics tell us that:

  • Children and youth experiencing homelessness are a prime target of this criminal industry.
  • Human Trafficking is an estimated $150 billion industry that takes place everywhere, to individuals of all genders, age, and socio-economic status.
  • The National Human Trafficking Hotline identified 10,583 trafficking situations in the United States in 2020, that same year California reported 1,334 cases of which 268 involved minors.
  • In 2020, there was a record 21.7 million reports of suspected child sexual exploitation made to NCMEC’s CyberTipline.
  • Nearly one in five of 911 youth interviewed in the Covenant House National Study of homeless youth were victims of trafficking, 15% for sex, 7.4% for labor and 3% for both.
