COVID-19 Tests

COVID-19 Tests

At-home COVID-19 tests are a quick and convenient way to check for a current COVID-19 infection. Most tests provide results in about 15 minutes.

When to Use a COVID-19 Test

  • If you have symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, congestion, body aches, or fatigue
  • After being exposed to someone with COVID-19
  • Before gathering with others, especially people at higher risk for severe illness

Check the Expiration Date

Some COVID-19 tests may appear expired, but many test lot numbers have received extended expiration dates. Check the lot number on the test box and compare it with the manufacturer or FDA expiration date information before throwing the test away.

A test is considered valid if it is used correctly and the control line appears. If the control line does not appear, the test did not work and the result should not be used.

How to Use the Test

  • Read and follow the instructions included with your test kit.
  • Wash your hands before and after testing.
  • Use the swab, liquid, and test card or strip exactly as directed.
  • Read the result only during the time window listed in the instructions.

Understanding Your Results

  • Positive: A positive result means the test detected COVID-19. Stay home and take steps to prevent spreading illness to others.
  • Negative: A negative result means COVID-19 was not detected at that time. If you have symptoms or were exposed, consider testing again in 24–48 hours.
  • Invalid: If the control line does not appear, the test is invalid. Use a new test.

Important Reminders

  • Store tests as directed on the package.
  • Do not use damaged or opened test kits.
  • Testing is most helpful when combined with staying home when sick, washing hands, improving ventilation, and wearing a mask when needed.
