My name is Vikki Magee Bauer and I am currently your district 3 Mono County supervisor. I have held this elected position for two terms after having been re-elected four years ago. I enjoy my work for the county and I love living and recreating here in the most beautiful part of California. I moved here after college because I decided that no amount of money was as important to me as living here in the Eastern Sierra and I still feel this way today.
For the last 22 years I have managed my family’s small motel on Gull Lake as well as serve the county, 18 years of that as the onsite manager. I have brought my children up learning to pitch in from an early age and now they are both in community service professions. Our motel provides a living for more than 4 families and I understand at a most basic level what its like to keep a small business afloat in these hard times. Economic viability and small business has never been more important to Mono County than now. I have consistently voted to support diversification of our tourism based economy and we have had success, thanks to the great work of our tourism commission and economic development departments.
It has been an exciting eight years and I have a lot to show for it, from leading ESTA and YARTS to recently playing a role in getting the Mono Lake Tufa Reserve off of the State Park closure list. I have the energy and desire to complete the many projects I have started, and I am effective at using my contacts to afford solutions to problems requiring quick reactions. I have established relationships and the trust of those I work with at the local, state and federal level, and this work pays dividends on a regular basis. I have worked long and hard to advocate for and maintain millions in Federal government land payments to Mono County to help pay for services like the Mono County Paramedics.
I have been at the forefront of keeping county finances stable while most California counties have fallen far behind. When I was elected, the county's finances were indecipherable so we went to the voters to create an appointed treasurer position that would report directly to the board. This move, along with creating a reserve account, has saved jobs and services. We did not spend all our money when times were good and the citizens of Mono County have benefited from this forethought. I am a strong voice on the board demanding that we balance fiscal responsibility with providing needed services to constituents.
I have a broad understanding of our County and what we face in the upcoming years, and my reputation as a problem solver will remain my biggest asset. Remaining open and responsive to my constituents and solving many of their issues with county departments and other local agencies is a priority. Always being available and having a history of following through demonstrates my commitment. I have provided leadership early and often in many situations, and I have set the stage for a teamwork approach that solves problems. By supporting and working closely county staff, I have helped to find new and innovative ways to overcome the challenges that today’s local government faces.
