Services offered by Animal Control

• Rabies surveillance, patrol, and investigation.
• Investigation of all reported animal bites. Reports taken and quarantines imposed.
• Rabies testing on animals that have bitten humans or domesticated animals (ie bats).
• Enforcement of current rabies vaccinations and dog licenses.
• Maintain records on lost and found animals - locate and reunite.
• Respond to sick or dead animals (within the scope of our authority).
• Maintain current lists of people looking for a special animal to adopt.
• Countywide adoption program - 95% successful adoption rate.
• Animal public nuisance investigation and enforcement when applicable.
• Trapping and impoundment of nuisance animals.
• Respond to "at large" (loose) dogs in leash law and non-leash law areas.
• Respond to and investigate reports of property destruction by dogs or cats.
• Pick-up of unwanted domestic animals and/or their litters and captured nuisance animals.
• Respond for rescue of sick, injured, trapped, or neglected animals. (Direction/Involvement by D.A.)
• Respond to calls involving potentially vicious or dangerous dogs. (Direction/Involvement by D.A.)
• Impound stray animals and unlicensed dogs. Impound "at large" dogs in leash law areas.
• Respond to dogs in season - females running loose or males gathering.
• Respond to and investigate calls for dogs and cats worrying or killing poultry or fowl.
• Respond to and investigate calls of dogs worrying or ringing down livestock.
• Respond to and investigate calls of dogs worrying or bringing down big game. (F&G Involvement)
• Respond to and investigate to calls of aggressive dogs towards humans and other animals.
• Respond to and investigate dogs running in packs.
• Respond to and investigate dogs chasing people, motor vehicles/interference with a highway.
• Respond to, investigate, and impound dogs from school grounds and dogs interfering with school buses.
• Respond to and investigate animal cruelty and neglect calls. Educate or prosecute as applicable.
• Respond to calls for neglect or cruelty at pack stations.
• Enforcement of animal cruelty laws, seizures, and participation in D. A. and court proceedings.
• Operate and maintain two animal shelters. The Bridgeport Animal Shelter (1-760-932-7407) and the Whitmore Animal Shelter (1-760-935-4734)
• Maintain spay/neuter education and assistance program.
• Provide animal bite prevention and education programs.
• Education regarding California Regulations against owning wolves and the danger in keeping wolves.
• Wolf-Hybrid education. Liabilities and concerns.
• Classroom visitation by animal control personnel.
• Respond to livestock on a roadway - remove for highway, secure, and mend fencing as needed.
• Receive subpoenas, attend court hearings, and provide testimony.
• Enforce commercial kennel requirements, regulations, inspections, and permits.
• Enforce county animal ordinances and state H&S and penal code regulations.
• Dispatch (destroy) injured wild animals per F&G instructions.
• Perform euthanasia as necessary.
• Community speaking engagements - educational and public awareness
• Facilitate seven annual low cost vaccination and licensing clinics.
