WATERSHED PLANNING PAGE |
||||
| Project Overview: | ||||
In collaboration with Mono County Collaborative Planning Team (MCCPT) Mono County applied for, and received two $198,000 grants to write watershed plans for the upper Owens and Walker river area. When the process is complete, there will be three Watershed Management Plans: Upper Owens (from Sherwin Grade to the beginning of the Mono Basin), Mono Basin, (June Lake Loop and Mono Lake Basin), and West Walker (Sonora Pass to Topaz Lake). A watershed plan takes into account the entire drainage instead of looking only at the individual areas of interest to specific agencies (political boundaries). A watershed plan must take into account all stakeholders, such as ranchers, recreationists, property owners (private and public) etc. The plan uses a holistic approach of addressing all uses with a goal of enhancing the local economy, way of |

life and preservation and appropriate use of our greatest natural resource, water. The watershed plan becomes a tool or guide for agencies and stakeholders to use in their decision making process taking into account the entire watershed instead of only particular areas of interest. The goal of watershed management is to plan and work toward an environmentally and economically healthy watershed that benefits all who have a stake in it. Managing the water and other natural resources is an effective and efficient way to sustain the local economy and environmental health. |
